PSCCL Attend SPE 14MEAL Conference

During 25-27,Nov,2014, the 14th Middle East Artificial Lift Conference and Exhibition was held in Bahrain. Yanlong Li and Han Jiang were invited to present this meeting. On the conference, Mr. Li reported the paper with topic of ¡°An Integrated Coordination Chart Considering Sand and Water Production and Its Application in Lifting Performance Analysis of Gas Wells¡±(SPE 173701). Ms. Jiang reported the topic of ¡°Experimental Study on Sand-Carrying Mechanism and Capacity Evaluation in Water-Producing Gas Wells and its Application in Artificial Lift Optimization¡±(SPE173700). These two report show the latest research progress in sand-carrying mechanism in gas well with sand production.

The theme of this conference is ¡°Intelligent Production...What is the next? ¡±. The 300 participant came from more than 21 countries. Some international company also took part in this meeting, such as  SLB,Baker-Huges, GE, etc.

PSCCL Attend SPE 14LACPEC Conference

PSCCL think highly of international communication.  on 21-23 May 2014, Changyin DONG attended  2014 LACPEC conference in Maracaibo, Venezuela. The academic conference was held on 21-23 May 2014, in Maracaibo, Venezuela, which is SPE Latin American and Caribbean Petroleum Engineering Conference (2014 LACPEC). The theme of 2014 LACPEC is "Strategic Opportunities in Latin America¡ªConventional and Unconventional Oil and Gas Systems."

On the conference, Mr. Dong report the latest research progress in gravel packing simulation. The paper is titled  "Experimental and Visual Simulation of Gravel Packing in Horizontal and Highly Deviated Wells(SPE 169237 )". In this paper, a full-scale simulation equipment for internal circulation gravel packing in horizontal wells is utilized for the study of the effects of screen offset, flow rate, and sand concentration on the ¦Á wave sand-bed equilibrium height. The comparison is made among the results using three empirical equations to calculate the equilibrium flow rate. Based on Gruesbeck model, a more accurate calculation method of the equilibrium sand-bed height is developed. Then, the mass and momentum conservation equations of the gravel and sand carrier fluid of two-phase flow in casing-screen annulus and single-phase flow in screen-washpipe annulus and the flow coupled equations of these two flow systems are established. A mathematic gravel-packing model for horizontal and highly deviated wells is thus obtained. The solution of the model can lead to the development of gravel-packing simulator software package, which can be used to visually simulate the gravel packing process. The characterization of the gravel packing process and the variation of each dynamic parameter are also analyzed.

The gravel packing process in horizontal or highly deviated wells involves the solid-liquid two-phase flow and the sand-bed migration under complicated conditions, in which the sand carrier fluid filtrates into the formation and the mass exchange occurs between the fluid in screen-washpipe annulus and the fluid in casing-screen annulus. One of the key problems in gravel packing is to predict the ¦Á wave sand-bed equilibrium height to simulate the gravel packing process and optimize operation parameters.

Doctor Dong Visited University of Calgary, Canada

Mr. Dong was invited to perform some research as a visiting scholar at the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering of the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary. His advisor is Dr. Shengnan(Nancy) Chen, assistant professor,  and the  research wasabout hydraulic fracturing horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs. The research intends to study the mechanism of fracture initialization and extending in horizontal wells. The facture scale and parameters, such as fracture size, numbers and direction, obviously influence well productivity. The fracture parameters optimizations are key factors to obtain good productivity and economic effect. The research in tight oil reservoir would be also helpful for the frac-packing horizontal wells in unconsolidated sandstone reservoir.

The research intends to focus on the mechanism of fracture initialization and extending in horizontal wells, and the law the facture scale and parameters influencing the well productivity. The goal of the research is to develop a new integrated theories, method and software to optimize the hydraulic frac job for horizontal wells in low permeability formation. In China, Mr. Dong is employed at School of Petroleum Engineering, University of Petroleum. His research work focus on well fracturing simulation and frac-pack sand control technology in unconsolidated reservoir. For this type of reservoir, horizontal well fracturing is not only a well stimulation measure, but also a real sand control technology. The horizontal well frac-packing in unconsolidated formation concerns many considerations as the same as that in tight oil reservoir.  By cooperative research with Dr. Shengnan(Nancy) Chen in Canada, Dong would learn their advanced ideas and method, which would be very helpful to my future academic research in China.

University of Calgary is a comprehensive university, especially with strengths in petroleum engineering. Dr. Shengnan(Nancy) Chen is engaged in artificial lifting and well fracturing stimulation. She visited UPC  in June 2013, and Mr. Dong had a pleasant discussion with her on the topic of horizontal well fracturing. She show great interesting in SCC Center's research work which may be helpful for her work. At that time, we reached an agreement about the future cooperative research.
