The special production characteristics of oil and gas reservoir-type underground gas storage (UGGS) leads to high risk of sand production. The high-efficiency sand control is the key technical support for long-term safe operation of UGGS. The operation style of oil and gas reservoir-type UGGS involves the alternating long-term gas injection and production with extremely high gas rate. This furtherly causes three alternating behaviors concerning formation stress and pressure, fluid flowing direction in porous media, and movement of gas-water interface in the reservoir. These alternating behaviors indicate much more complex mechanism of sand production and improve the difficulty of sanding prediction and control. Firstly, the production characteristics of UGGS and its influence mechanism on rock properties evolution, especially the mechanism of inducing sand production, were analyzed in detailed. The latest progress of sanding simulation and prediction method for UGGS was summarized correspondingly. Secondly, the present situation of sand control technology in UGGS over the world was also investigated for emphasis. In general, the currently used techniques for sand control mainly came from traditional oil and gas reservoir. The particular sand control technology for UGGS wells is not still fully developed and is facing urgent demand of research. Finally, the key engineering and scientific problems of sand control in UGGS were proposed, and meanwhile, the future development tendency of sand control was discussed briefly. This comprehensive investigation helps to provide valuable reference for sand control and well completion in the future increasing construction of oil and gas reservoir-type UGGS.
